New drivers for 2024 Winley Martin and Tashne Wait.

Ride like the wind

Daniel Pienaar Technical High School is prepping the rally drivers of the future.

Congratulations to Winley Martin and Tashne Wait, who have been appointed Daniel Pienaar Technical High School’s drivers for the 2024 Rally Season.

Winley, a Grade 12 student, and 16-year-old Tashne will be taking part in their first rally on 6 April at Scribante.

Competition to be part of the team was tight: according to Francois Vermaak, who heads up motorsport at DP, three hopefuls took part in the school’s testing season, which was hosted on Jachtvlakte’s challenging roads on 8 March. The school wasn’t looking for the fastest driver, Vermaak explains, but the driver who demonstrated the best driving style, communicated best with their navigator and handled pressure well.

Winley will be driving a VW Polo 1.2tsi, with DP teacher Kaylin Kapp navigating, while Teshne is driving a VW Citi Golf 1.4i, with Wesley Schultz acting as her navigator.

DP’s motorsport programme has been shown to have a real impact on learners’ lives, with three former learners going on to navigate as professional learners. The school was also recently in the news for winning the FIA President’s Award for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
