Looking forward, looking back...

December! It felt like it would never come — and now, here it is, bringing with it the promise of special time with family and friends, and for many of us, a well-deserved break.

The importance of that rest is something that cannot be overstated. In November — or, Movember, as we dubbed it in honour of the members who took up the challenge to grow a moustache — we aimed to spark a conversation around men’s mental health. It’s difficult to grasp why discussion around this vital issue is still halted by stigma — and yet, many men feel they cannot speak up about anxiety, stress and depression. We sincerely hope that our attempt to build a caring community where people feel able to share their concerns has gone some way to address this.

Equally deserving of attention is the issue of Gender-Based Violence. This scourge is still a major challenge for South African women, as the recent murder of teacher Kirsten Kluyts shows, which is why your support of initiatives like 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children (taking place between 25 November and 10 December) is vital. Please remember that your voice is one of the most powerful tools weapons we have in the war against GBV — don’t be afraid to use it.

This is our last newsletter for 2023, so look out for our next edition in the new year when we will have a combined Dec/January round-up. We will be back with more updates on industry developments and our ever-helpful tips and advice.  I would like to thank each and every one of you for your service and support during 2023. MIWA is a stronger association because of you. We look forward to the challenges a new year will bring.

Until then, have a blessed festive season. If you are travelling, please travel safely and enjoy your quality time with friends and family.

Pieter Niemand,
MIWA National Director
