The inaugural African Karting Cup is a massive success

South African talent shone bright at this exciting event.

The African Karting Cup (AKC), which took place at Zwartkops on 17 and 18 February, was a noteworthy undertaking for many reasons.

First off, it was the inaugural edition of this event. As such, its popularity bodes well: with 61 competitors from nine African countries taking part, this is sure to become a highly anticipated part of the racing calendar.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem pointed out that this has important implications for the development of motorsport in Africa. It was especially exciting for participants, many of whom have never had an opportunity to compete against karters from other countries or take part in an event of this stature.

The AKC stands out for another reason, too: it revealed just how much talent there is among young South African karters, with our participants doing the country proud. The OK-N class (14 years and older) was won by South African Muhammed Wally (who may now go on to represent South Africa in the FIA Karting World Championships), followed by fellow countrymen Nikki Vostanis and Niko Zafiris.

South Africans also took first, second, and third place in the Ok-J Class (11 to 14-year-olds): congratulations to Wian Boshoff, Luke Hill, and Amani Kinyua. In the Mini Rok class (8 to 13-year-olds), honours went to South Africans Max Boshoff, Declan Jurgens, and Sebastien Blignaut.

Karting is growing in popularity all over the world. The benefits of karting extend beyond the track. The skills and attributes developed through karting have proven to assist a child in school as well. The focus and concentration required on the track can translate to better attention and performance in the classroom and the physical fitness gained from competing, can lead to improved energy and endurance making it easier for kids to stay active and engaged throughout the school day.  It is also a great confidence booster, teaching kids to believe in their abilities and strive for success.
